All good things… final thoughts

What a ride. When we started this revamp of Radio Broadcasting 5 years ago, who thought that we’d have over 100 students create over 250 episodes on countless topics. Here are some of my “final thoughts”.

Final thoughts

Every semester we’d stumble along, learning new things:

  • Audio editing
  • Sound quality engineering
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Our own voice quality
  • How much music and sound can add
  • New genres and new podcasts

Students in the class always to amazed me–their creativity, their passion, their questions and willingness to try something new. We developed solid editing, interviewing, critical listening and storytelling skills. Also, we enjoyed learning from each other,

As I put together these final thoughts, I now recall life lived–the highs, lows and everything in between. Furthermore, I’m honored to see (and hear) from students past and present who’s professional and personal lives were affected from being part of the class.

The times they are a changing…

bald white guy in glasses reflecting on final thoughts for the class he's teaching

BTW, this final “promo” features something that we talked about in the last week of class–the role of technology. However, the role of communicators will change but telling good stories won’t–even with the rise of AI.

So, this promo “thank you”, was all AI-generated, except for the script. I wrote the script, but AI generated everything else.

  • Cover art: Microsoft AI Image creator (prompt: “podcasting class with a bald white guy in glasses teaching.”)
  • Voices: ElevenLabs.io (AI voices – Chris, Patrick, Emily, Matilde and all “read” the same script)
  • Ambient Music: Loudly AI Music Generator (prompt: ambient cinematic)

What’s next?

Look for a new Podcasts for Aggies as this class evolves into a broader digital storytelling course. Podcasts themselves have grown out of just “audio-only”; they now embrace and engage across social media as well as in the video space. So, this new course will take a look at those spaces and works to show how storytelling influences and is influenced by these new media.

Being in your 20s is a hectic time. With so many life changes coming so fast, no one knows what to expect next. You’re not a child, but sometimes you still feel like you. Half of us could not tell you what the purpose of an IRS form is. Finding your lifelong partner feels harder than it should be.

On this episode of “In Your 20’s’, Lyndi Harris and guest Caroline Jurecka talk dating. From the awkwardness to the expectations to the disappointments, we get into how difficult it is to successfully date in this day and age.

Being in your early twenties, there is this expectation and pressure that you have to find your person now. Once you’re out of school, your chances are slim to none.

However, with the progression of this generation, dating isn’t impossible. It’s just different though it definitely feels impossible at times.

From someone with very limited experience and someone with years of experience, we both feel like every expectation is too high for men to reach, but after discussion, our standards feel like the bear minimum.

  • What can we as women do better when dating?
  • What do we wish men would do in dating?
  • Has social media ruined the dating world?
  • Are we all too young?
  • Do we need to start going for older men?

There are so many questions in the dating world that no one has the answer for. Especially when our parents were married already in their 20s.

Join us as we navigate this conversation surrounding everyone’s most annoying topic.

In Your 20s: Milestones and mistreatment w/ Lindsey Imboden

On this episode of ‘In Your 20s’, Lyndi Harris along with Lindsey Imboden (not to be confused), discuss the differences in the phases of life you can face while being the same age as other peers.

Some friends are having babies, and others are traveling the world and documenting it all.

There is so much that stereotypically happens in your 20s, but not everyone is on the same timeline. You don’t hit 24 and automatically meet the love of your life or get your dream job. Oftentimes, there are bumps in the road that slow you down.

We have been friends for a decade. With that, we get the privilege to watch old and new friends achieve their dreams. However, we aren’t there yet.

Entering the medical field, Lindsey has dealt with a lot of treatment towards her as a woman that should not be tolerated, but we ask the questions:

  • How do you get taken seriously when you’re only 22?
  • Why is it hard for people to accept that young women can have careers?
  • Is it really necessary to have babies before a career?
  • Do you really have to know what you want to do with the rest of your life at 22?

Sometimes this can feel like you’re not doing enough with your life, and comparison can diminish the confidence you have in yourself. This is not the case though.

From marriage to graduate school, to dream jobs or not-so-dream jobs, Lindsey and Lyndi cover all bases of the expected milestones to take place in your 20s!

How to improve your herd

There are many different aspects to consider when choosing desirable traits on how to advance your herd. Maternal Values you should consider when choosing animals that will be kept as replacement heifers or herd bulls.

Download

The Seven EPD’s to Consider for Maternal Traits

  1. Calving Ease Direct- expressed in differences in percentages of unassisted births along with higher value indicating greater calving ease in first calf heifers.
  2. Birth Weight- expressed in pounds and predicted by a sires ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
  3. Weaning Weight-expressed in pounds and used to predict the sires ability to transmit weaning growth of his progeny
  4. Residual Average Daily Gain- expressed in pounds per day, it predicts a sires genetic ability for post weaning gain in future progeny compared to other sires when you take into account the amount of feed being consumed.
  5. Scrotal Circumference- a measurement based in centimeters and it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting scrotal size when compared to other bulls within the breed
  6. Maternal Milk EPD this is a predictor of a sires genetic ability for milk production and the mothering ability as expressed in his daughters.
  7. Docility is crucial when retaining both heifers and bulls. Docility is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament with a higher value indicating a more favorable docility.

What to Consider When Looking for Steers

  • What is your end goal?
  • What is your budget?
  • Is this the breeder to buy from?

We are LIVE! Traveling CHEAP!

How we travel cheap in college! What’s the Move Podcast episode 1 is HERE! For the first OFFICIAL episode, I will be joined by one of my roommates, and my travel buddy, Cammie Mitchell. Cammie and I are pretty much on the same page when it comes to traveling. We love cheap college trips. Our favorite way to pass time is stalking Google Flights and booking cheap plane tickets. The 2 of us have a pretty strong track record for driving or flying somewhere and having absolutely no plans once we get there. We like to figure out the plan as we go. This works GREAT for us 70 percent of the time. We usually get a pretty good story out of the other 30 percent.

I met Cammie my freshman year of college in our Freshman Leadership Organization. Shortly after becoming friends, I convinced her to go on our first ever trip together to Rosemary Beach, Florida in May of 2021. Since then, we’ve planned more trips than we should, but we can both agree that we don’t regret any of them.

Road Trip of our Dreams

Fall of 2022 was the year we were going to go on the road trip we had dreamed of for so long. We planned to go to the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. We are proud of this trip, and like to consider ourselves trip influencers for this one. After posting videos and photos, we had at least 10 people ask us about the details so they could go on the trip the next year. I guess it was that iconic. So, tune in and hear all the details about how we pulled off this trip in the middle of our fall semester.

To give you some spoilers– these three things are KEY:

  1. HipCamp
  2. Fall Break
  3. PB&Js

Cammie and I have traveled A LOT, together and separately. Cammie has traveled across Italy with her phone completely dead, and I’ve traveled countless times to Colorado and have paid strangers to drive me across the state. *Disclaimer* I don’t  recommend this as a college aged girl, but you’ll hear why this happened soon. We’re grateful for these travel hiccups because we have some pretty great stories to tell now. Listen now to find out how we travel cheap in college!

Q&A, Q&A, Q&A!!!

WE HAVE BIG NEWS! What’s the Move Podcast is officially doing its first ever question and answer advice column! Life, faith, relationships, travel, toxic friendships, the things we are loving right now-you name it and will do our best to help and encourage!

Wisdom with Caroline Spears

Who doesn’t love a good question and answer? This week, I am joined by Caroline Spears to answer these exciting questions. This friend of mine is a senior here at Texas A&M University, studying English and Communications. Although, I keep on telling her she needs to be a psychology major so that she can be a counselor- she is GIFTED in helping people navigate the hard things in life.

Caroline is the type of friend I can sit down with and talk to for hours and hours. Truthfully, there are so many conversations we have where we leave thinking we should just record a podcast together because of how long we can talk. Thankfully, the time has come for just this! Caroline is one of the wisest people I know. She is incredibly passionate about God and His word. She is a professional friend and knows what people around her need. This girl knows what she is talking about- Caroline is the chaplain of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, and has led Bible Studies around the Bryan College Station area for several secular organizations. There is no one better I can think of to answer these questions with me.

A preview for some of the questions will be answering:

  1. How do I find/ build God glorifying friendships?
  2. How do I handle conflict in a God glorifying way?
  3. What are things/products/hobbies y’all are loving right now?

We had a blast recording this. Y’all will not want to miss it. Come join us as we answer your questions and let us know if we should record a PART 2! We have PLENTY more to cover! You can email whatsthemovepodcast@gmail.com to be an (anonymous) part of this episode! Nothing is off limits!

For all of those hopeless romantics or maybe people trying to learn the do’s and don’ts of love, my name is Morgan Marburger and for years, I have loved getting to learn about how people met their spouses. The way that each couple recalls oddly specific details, or maybe doesn’t remember them at all. I have found that people often show a different side to themselves when speaking about love. It is almost as if in the book of your life, that person is a co-writer. Lovely to Meet You is a podcast series that helps couples tell the story of how they met.

Love by the Masses

Love is one the most abundant things in our lives. You see it everywhere.

  • In home cooked meals
  • In a sky that’s painted by the sunset
  • In the music you listen to
  • In the people you see everyday
  • In someone saying “this reminded me of you”
  • In the rain
  • In the way someone looks at you

Love looks different to everyone, and what gift it is to experience love is so many ways.

The First Meet-Cute

Our story begins with Jeff and Jackie Savell.

Dr. Jeff Savell is Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Texas A&M University. In this episode of Lovely to Meet You, we will get to hear from Dr. Savell on moments that stuck out to him during the period of his life when he was chasing the woman of his dreams.

It started in grade school and the turning point of their relationship centered around a Dallas Cowboys game.

All of your questions will be answered soon!

  • Who made the first move?
  • Was it love at first sight?
  • Did they both know they would soon be married?
  • Were there any big moments that stood out to both of them?
  • How did he propose?

Endgame

Throughout their lives, the Savell’s have always had a large impact on all that they surround themselves with. Whether that be Texas A&M University, College Station, or even the people they have interacted with continuously. Listen to this Episode 1 of Lovely to Meet You to learn more about the longstanding love story and the love that still is apparent with Jeff and Jackie Savell.

The Importance of Investing

Investing in things is vital to our everyday lives.

  • Investing our money
  • Investing our time
  • Investing our effort

What do you invest in? Personally, I enjoy investing my time in people and the relationships around me. This is a common thread between my family. Both my parents and grandparents have been examples of what consistency, support, and respect look like within a marriage.

Investing in the people around you also means knowing them on a deeper level. So often, we can get caught up in the politics of making our own name known.

“Friendship is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others.” — C.S. Lewis

Learn the beauties of others and invest in the people around you. They could change your life.

The Other Side

This episode we will be getting to hear from Mrs. Jackie Savell on exactly how she and her husband met. It is interesting to see where their stories align and differ.

How did Jackie perceive Jeff when they first met? Did she know instantly that she was going to marry him? Is there a moment that she vividly remembers during their season of dating?

Jackie provides us with some great advice and lessons on how to look at life and love. The investments she has made within her life have given her quite the return. I am confident in saying that Jackie Savell was truly someone who was lovely to meet!

Self Love Mentality – My Mindful Mind – Episode 1

23Apr

http://aglifesciences.tamu.edu/agcj366/wp-content/uploads/sites/118/2024/04/Episode-1.mp3

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Mentality Behind Self Love

The art of loving yourself doesn’t come easy. I spent many years and experiences trying to figure out my own mind and why I wasn’t seeing the progress in myself that I wanted to see, but the truth is self love is more than confidence and composure. Self love is finding what you love, working towards goals you set for yourself, and not allowing other people to get in the way of the process. I have spent years reflecting on my own mind and experiences I have gone through and have finally mastered what self love truly is. If I could go back and make the process of finding how to love myself better I would go about it with these simple steps.

Self Love is Setting Goals For Yourself

I think the first step to truly loving and working on yourself is to find what you enjoy and truly love.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself when searching for what you truly love:

  • What do I do in my free time?
  • What are hobbies that make me happy?
  • What are your values?
  • What are you passionate about?
  • If you had a whole day to do anything without any limits, what would you do?

After finding what you enjoy doing, find how it aligns with your future with what you see yourself doing in the years to come and make that an end goal. Now that you have established what you want to accomplish in life, set forth goals in the process that build up to your desired result. These goals along the way are not something that should be procrastinated. You have one life and you may miss out on opportunities if you do not take them as they are presented to you. You will not be successful if you do not put yourself out there.

Self Love Is the Relationships You Surround Yourself With

Self Love

Believe it or not your daily relationships have a huge impact on you as a person. If you hang out with someone enough you can start to become similar people.

Evaluate who is in your day to day life and ask yourself these questions about each individual that came to mind:

  • Would they encourage me to follow my goals?
  • Do they correct me when I am wrong?
  • Are they honest with me?
  • Do they listen to me?
  • Are they emotionally mature?
  • Do they show genuine interest in my life?
  • Do they love that I work towards what I love?
  • Are we able to talk together and establish things that each other can work on to make each other better people?

If you have a genuine friendship, you should have answered each of these questions with yes. Genuine friendships are encouraging. They strive to make you a better individual and push you to do more for yourself. If you answered no to any of these questions, I would advise you to talk about any question you answered no to with the person it applied to. Communication is the basis of all relationships and anything can be easily fixed with simple conversation.

In Conclusion

Overall the mental part of self love is the hardest because it all comes down to knowing what you want for yourself, how you are going to go about it, and what you do and do not tolerate with the friendships that will be encouraging you in the process.

Discipline is Essential

Believe it or not, discipline is where self love begins. Growing up when my parents would ground me they would always say “We do this because we love you.” As you can imagine, I didn’t believe a word they said, but as I have grown up and learned more about myself

 Working out

I believe outside of the goals of working towards what you love to do, I find working on my physical appearance to be a huge step in my self love journey. If I look my best I feel my best and working out has helped my confidence a lot. Working out is something that requires an abundance of self discipline. Many people will say that they are going to start working out and then fall off after a couple of weeks or even just a few days.

Discipline

Below you will find a list of tips to prolong your physical fitness journey:

  • Plan out what you are going to do before you get in the gym

Watch videos of fitness influences and find what you want to work on and what workouts you would be comfortable doing. Having a set plan makes you avoid time walking around the gym clueless.

  • Be confident!

What many do not realize is everyone goes to the gym to work on something, it is nothing to be ashamed of. Walk in with confidence and you’ll find working out to be much more enjoyable.

  • Give yourself rest.

Don’t over work yourself. It is okay to have off days, your body needs it. I give myself one day a week to let my body recover and the next day I start training again.

  • Stay consistent!

When you think you can’t, YOU CAN! Consistency is needed if you want to see the results you work for. Making excuses for yourself is easy, but this is where discipline comes into play. If you are thinking about giving yourself a prolonged break, remember what you have been working for and the reason you started. Consistency is KEY.

Healthy Eating

Along with physical appearance I have found that healthy eating is something that I wanted to focus on in my self-love journey. After changing my diet I have noticed a boost in energy, clearer skin, and just feeling better all around. Focus on primarily drinking water and a lot of it! Water is so good for you and you can never have enough of it. Many do not know the amount of sugar and calories that are found in sweet drinks. Some drinks have the equivalent effect on your body as a meal would have.

I have included more fruits and vegetables in my diet and have cut down on my bread intake. Eating healthy does not mean you are eating food that is less desirable. There are a bunch of great healthy food recipes you can find on the internet. I personally found a lot through searching food prep recipes on Pinterest and I use them nearly everyday. Experiment, find what you like, and make a food prepping schedule.  You will find yourself feeling less guilty about the food you consume and you will be able to feel the difference in your everyday life.

Shotgun coach in action!

Howdy Howdy Shotgun shooters! Welcome to my first episode of Shoot the Skeet! Words cannot express how excited I am to introduce my guest for today, my dad and full-time shooting coach, John Moon!

Dad to Shooting Coach

Growing up on a hunting ranch, I was well averse to a shotgun, Dad made sure of that. Dad has been hunting since he could pick up a gun so when I loved it too he took it and ran.

The “Aggie Dad” sticker on his shotgun is his pride and joy

At the ripe age of 11, Dad sat me down and we discussed competitive shooting and buying my first competition shotgun, a Zoli. When I said of course I want to do that, his entire face beamed. From then on he became my full-time shooting coach, dedicating hours a day to making me the best. Having a support system like that completely changed my game, especially mentally.

However, Dad had to learn to coach me not just on the physical aspect of shooting but the mental as well. Which was a challenge in itself as a strong-willed and very competitive kid. He was an all-around coach being:

  1. Fun Dad/nice coach:
    • who always made it a competition between the two of us
    • Helped when I needed it
    • Encouraged me
  2. Supportive Dad/ upset coach
    • Coach: made sure that I knew he was disappointed with my last shot
    • Dad: stepped in to tell me what was wrong and to “get ’em next time”.
  3. Encouraging Dad/ quiet coach
    • Sometimes on the sporting course, I am sad to say that frustration gets the better of me and puts me in quite the mood.
    • Dad: there to dance, sing a little song, or make a joke to keep me in a good mood.
    • Coach: he knows to be quiet at this time because it will frustrate me more to hear what I should be doing.

Shotgun Shooting Coaches and Support Systems

As youth shooters, I believe we take for granted how much our support system does for us. This can be coaches, parents, or anyone who takes time out of their day to contribute to your skill. Small things such as:

  • Watch your form and where you are on the clay/skeet
  • keep you grounded and focused
  • Remind you that we shoot for fun at the end of the day and to relax 🙂
  • A harsh critic
  • An understanding and sympathetic supporter
  • A shoulder to cry on when the frustration kicks in

We may take these small things for granted, however for your mental shooting game it is one of the most important aspects. Don’t take for granted your coaches and supporters, they may be the difference between a 99 and a 100!

Be sure to tune in to my next episode of Shoot the Skeet, starring two very special guests!

Sydney Craven accepting her National Champion title

Our Guest Shooters!

Sydney Craven started shooting at 10 years old after her father forced her into it and she fell in love. Involved in not only the shooting aspect of 4H, she was also an officer in her hometown club. This has transferred to her being a crucial officer for the A&M Skeet and Trap team. She is a past Texas 4-H state team member and collegiate ladies’ national champion. She will be talking with us about practice styles, mental challenges within the sport, and overcoming them.

Madi Barbee “shooting the skeet”!

Madi Barbee started shooting in 6th grade when her little brother started to show an interest in it. Albeit she claims she didn’t truly fall in love until she joined the A&M team. She is a skilled shooter on A&M’s team and was a part of the 2023 National Champion team contributing greatly. Furthermore, Madi is a highly decorated shooter within 4H, FFA, and SCTP. She is excited to discuss mentality within the sport, especially, in a male-dominated sport.

Tyler and I in 2018 when I shot a whitetail buck.

Behind the Stands welcomes its first episode for all hunters to enjoy and learn while being in the hunting blind or relaxing at home! I\Over the past seven years, Tyler has proven to be one of the best hunters I’ve known.

Tyler duck hunting and mounted a pretty mallard duck he shot.

Tyler is one of the best hunters I have known for the past seven years. He and my sister got married in 2022. Him being a part of our family is a blessing.

His knowledge of the hunting industry is greatly appreciated by those around him.

Fun fact: He is also a HUGE Aggie fan!!

He grew up hunting throughout his childhood and learned how to hunt from his grandad. Tyler, also has been a part of his stepdad’s high fence ranch, Pura Vida Ranch, for many years.

Nutrients! Nutrients!

During our interview, Tyler said it is important to realize the different nutrients available to whitetail. In general, high-fence operations maintain more controlled variables than low-fence operations. He mentioned that Pura Vida Ranch doesn’t aim to have those crazy massive nested tine Whitetails like Northern states such as Minnesota and Ohio have.

Pura Vida Ranch aims for three key distinctions

  • Natural
  • Domestic
  • Healthy

…looking Whitetail.

Tyler moved to south Texas on my family’s low fence property, he stated that he aims to providing nutrients to the Whitetails on the low fence property. Although he comes from a high fence operation, he does not treat low fence operations differently. Tune in and hear all the details Tyler shares about his knowledge of what works best for both high and low fence operations and tips for hunters.

Houston used a thermal to hunt a hog at night.

Howdy and welcome to episode 2 of Behind the Stands, in this episode I am joined by two special hunting guests who have been heavily active in the hunting industry for years. Jacob Pfiel and Houston Heger have their technique of hog hunting which makes this episode interesting. Houston has experience in hunting hogs with his thermals while Jacob uses dogs, known as “hog dogs.”

Jacob with his hog dog after a hog hunt in the afternoon.

Houston and I have actually a special relationship and we’ve been dating for about three years. With the many hunting dates we have had, I have learned so much from him and still am today.

I met Jacob during my freshman year of college at Blinn Community where we both were in the same class one semester. Ironically, Jacob and Houston were neighbors until Houston graduated from Texas A&M University in 2023 (WHOOP!). During Houston’s last year in college, him and I got to know Jacob more and learn the many aspects of hog hunting. Today, Jacob is a student at Texas A&M University.

Jacob's hog dogs on his four-wheeler.

Tips for hunting with thermals

  • Get experience shooting!
  • Go hunting with someone who can give you advice
  • Be quiet and stealthy!

Tips for hunting with dogs

  • Be cautious when hunting with dogs on small properties
  • Be alert about where your dogs go

What’s Underneath All That Sno? – Episode 1 – Why Buck’s?

For over 30 years, Bahama Buck’s has been shaving what they claim to be The Greatest Sno On Earth. As an Avalanche Crew member for almost three years, I can proudly say that this franchise is just getting started.

In our very first episode of “What’s Underneath All That Sno?” we begin to shovel out what makes Bahama Buck’s so special.

Is it the endless flavor combinations and dirty sodas? The friendships that flourish with each round of new hires? Maybe the fun atmosphere and laid-back scheduling? Or is it honestly the cute merch, with each shirt and hat stamped with an embroidered snowcone?

To find out, I handed Cole Ratermann a shovel, a fellow Avalanche Crew member like myself who’s worked at Bahama Buck’s for over two years.

Cole is a junior industrial distribution major at Texas A&M University. Like myself, we both started working at Buck’s our freshman year and have stuck by the snowcone shack, sticky hands and all. The only difference is on top of working at Buck’s, Cole is a tutor, an “Automation Specialist Intern” and does everything Impact-related on the side.

To simply state, Cole works three jobs and still manages school, family and friends. So why does he keep snowcones on his resume?

Well, to simply state again, Cole says, “It’s the people.”

From late-night Fuego runs to the Bahama Buck’s Olympics, there’s something in the Sno that bonds an Avalanche Crew for years to come. And whether that’s sticky flavor, Sour Patch sauce, or condensed milk, Cole and I can both agree that Bahama Buck’s is one of a kind. Nonetheless, no matter how close Kona Ice gets to mimicking our Tiger’s Blood Sno, it’ll be the crew that sets us apart. Every time.

Bahama Buck’s has over 100 original, gourmet flavors.

However, when it comes to flavor combinations, the possibilities are truly endless.

On this week’s episode of “What’s Underneath All That Sno?” we’re looking at the top of the dome, where sweet, sticky syrup lies.

That’s right. We’re breaking down all of Bahama Buck’s flavors, from best to worst, weirdest to sweetest, and even exposing the top secret.

To help me relay all these combos, I sat down with the owner herself, Laurie Roman, who’s been with Buck’s through and through, even during their awkward phase when they released the infamous macaron flavor.

Kids about to eat Sno

Laurie and her husband Joe opened up the first Bahama Buck’s in College Station in 2013 with a small store located on Holleman Dr. Little did they know that “Holly” would break numerous records in sales and be known as one of the top-ranked stores within the franchise.

For the past 10 years, Laurie and Joe have seen it all, from COVID closing off front orders to inflations leaving people questioning the price of frozen water.

However, one thing seems to remain the same, or should I say 100. Flavors.

So grab your favorite Sno or a pen and pencil as Laurie and I reveal secret menu items like a “Lucky Charms Sno” and what our all-time favorite flavor combinations are. From the owner herself, you don’t want to miss it!

Hannah goes in depth about her roommate experience during the fall of 2021 and also gives some advice to others who may be going through the unfortunate circumstance of having roommates from hell.

The orange tabby cat to your right is Pumpkin. Hannah decided to raise Pumpkin as her own due to Pumpkin’s malnutrition from his previous owner (AKA Hannah’s roommate).

When thinking of bad roommates, you probably think of someone who is obnoxiously loud and inconsiderate. They probably choose not to wash their dishes or throw away the trash.

How about those roommates who continue to steal your food and never take their clothes out of the washer and dryer? We all hate those types of roommates.

Well, combine those qualities and make it 100 times worse. That was the case for room number 1221 at a beat-up apartment in College Station, Texas.

In this episode, I talk to kinesiology student Vanessa Garcia about her bad roommate experience during the fall of 2022.

She gives us the run-down on her semester-long battle with a randomly assigned roommate. Vanessa also shared her life after the nightmare and a post-roommate experience reflection.

The dog to your left, Cowboy, is one of the few animals who are saved from owner abandonment. Vanessa took Cowboy under her wing and they have been inseparable ever since.

Relationships + College

Relationships in college can be hard. Whether it is a relationship with your friends, family members, or a significant other, they are never easy.

Everyone needs a big sister, and that is what we are here to do. Talk about the good and bad related to dating, friendships, and life in general.

During this episode, Saige and I welcome the person who completes our girl gang, Eleeza, to dive into the topic of dating in college. Though we usually spend most of our time gossiping in a booth at Chili’s, but today we had to settle for our living room.

In this episode, we talk about the behaviors and actions that are needed from both parties of a relationship to make it a healthy and fulfilling relationship.

Specifically, we talk about communication, quality time, trust, support, and compromise.

Long Distance Relationships In College

However, we also talk about just how hard dating can be while in college. We are constantly changing as people, and this is a time in our lives when we are exploring new opportunities. Our uncertainty about the future, maturity levels, and social pressure all play a role in what happens to our relationships.

All three of us have been in long distance relationships in college. While some of these relationships have gone better than others (lol), our experiences have allowed us to have different point of views on having a long-distance relationship in college.

Relationships in college can be hard, buy when they are long-distance relationships with someone in another town, state, or school it presents a totally different challenge. This is where we talk about our own personal experiences with long-distance relationships while in college and talk about it from our point of view.

Come laugh, and potentially cry, during this episode with us. We get into the good, and bad, associated with all things dating during college.

Don’t miss out on our podcast or those from our friends!

The Art of Not Giving a F***.

Everyone can benefit from not giving a f***. Especially us as young adults could benefit from navigating not caring.

During this episode, Saige and I welcome one of our good friends, Will Spicer, to dive into the topic of navigating not caring.

Spicer, that is what our whole friend group calls him, is the first person that came to our mind when it came to living a care-free life. He is the best to go to when you need straightforward advice, yet you could still cry on his shoulder if you need to.

We have all heard about the book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F***, which both Saige and I own because we could use the help. We all worry too much about what others think about us or are saying about it, but in this episode, we dive into the art of not giving a f*** over the little things.

Not Caring Can Be Hard AF.

While we have only known Spicer for a little less than two years, he is the type of person that walks to the beat of his own drum. Here are some of the scenarios we went over for how to not care.

  • Roommates being bi*ches
  • Your friends being haters
  • The job search not going well
  • People talking ish being your back

We have too much going on in our lives to care about the little things and to keep those things from living our lives. The time to live is now, and we aren’t going to let what others think or say about us keep us from living our life to the fullest.

Come laugh with us while we navigate not caring. During this episode you will truly see just how much Saige and I benefited from this episode ourselves.

Follow along with me, Jade…Dominique, Annabel, Taylor, Rachael and other stories from our roommates, Callie and Ellie. We will give you the inside scoop on our time at Crystal Plaza.

Washington DC Hilltern Interns on the loose

From Annabel searching for slurpee lids and rocking dad sunglasses, to the delicious 7/11 brownies that kept us all afloat throughout the summer, a guitar signed by ex-speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, and a less than savory breakfast spot next to 7/11, this podcast will give you the insider information into our experience in DC

ANRP/PPIP interns, as someone that was also terrified for my internship in DC. I watched what felt like a countless amount of podcasts about how to behave in the office, the best ways to commute, how to take the metro, and more extremely boring topics of the such. Think of this as the anti-podcast podcast. What I mean by that is, instead of discussing what to do in the office, we touch on what to do outside of the office to capitalize (get it…nation’s capital?)  on your time in DC as Washington DC Hillterns.

Annabel finding slurpee cups for the Washington DC Hilltern Intern

This episode will cover:

  • The best treats to buy at 7/11
  • Why to befriend the doorman, Cameron at Crystal Plaza
  • How we **almost** won a guitar signed by ousted speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy
  • The importance of showing up to out-of-office events
  • And more from the Washington DC Hillterns

Fireworks on the Potomac with Washington DC Hillterns
Fireworks on the Potomac

Before you begin reading our sneak peeks and behind the scenes clips for Episode 2 of the mini series, Doozies in DC, I have a suggestion. Open this playlist so you can truly be immersed in what myself and the roommates of 503S were listening to during the 4th of July festivities at our Nation’s Capital for our Washington DC Hillterns.

Fireworks in DC with Washington DC Hillterns

This episode will give some of the most pertinent information for summer ANRP/PPIP interns in DC. With the most important takeaway being…DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GO TO THE NATIONAL MALL TO WATCH FIREWORKS. There will be way too many people and you will have to be there multiple hours in advance. Don’t get me started on how long it’ll take you to get home on the metro after.

However, I have a secret to share with you of how to have the BEST firework experience in DC.

Enjoying 4th of July Fireworks:

-Find a location other than the National Mall. We suggest sitting across from the Potomac or renting a kayak or other boat so you can be directly on the body of water.

The view from the Washington DC Hillterns fireworks location

-Pick up a cheap food like pizza

-Bring sparklers

Enjoy your perfect firework experience with Washington DC Hillterns

-Enjoy your perfect firework experience

The fireworks reflected on the Potomac

-Leave quickly (or slightly early) if you don’t want to wait forever for the metro

Washington DC Hillterns on a busy metro

Other important suggestions: Do not invite your Judo teacher neighbor with two kids to your cookout.

Now, sit back, listen to the eagle screech playlist, and get ready to have the ultimate patriotic listen. This is how to enjoy 4th of July in DC with your favorite members of 503S.

Washington DC Hillterns Potomac view

Behind the Scenes:

The playlist you listened to was called Eagle Screech and was made by myself, the roommates of 503S, other Washington DC Hillterns, and friends with very strict guidelines:

It must mention America, an American city, beer, guns, cowboys, liberty, eagles, red, white, and blue, make us feel proud to be Americans, or receive a majority vote of being American enough. Additionally, there were no British artists allowed on the playlist.

Darin Wiley is a man, a myth and some could say a legend. Wiley has been known to be seen at every cow show nationwide and internationally. From clipping cattle as a young man, Wiley has been part of the industry for the past 30 years, carrying on a tradition known as cattle ranching, raising show cattle and most importantly fitting cattle.

Who is Darin Wiley

Wiley resides in Snook, Texas, managing Origins Ranches, raising registered Brangus cattle, and living his dream job. So why not get a glimpse into how he got there, why he chose this route, and how he decided to manage one ranch for a living.

Wiley’s passion for clipping started at a young age and wow, it was a journey from quitting college and doing it full-time to going back to college and finishing his degree. Wiley wouldn’t have been successful without his mentors, so he is here to spread his knowledge and how to be the best of the best.

Full-Time Fitter on the Road

  • You will fail before you succeed
  • Early mornings and late nights
  • Surround yourself with people that want you to succeed
  • Treat others the way you would like to be treated
  • Making it to the backdrop is the goal but not the end all be all
  • The only way you will learn is if you start
  • Hustle is everything

Wiley shares his experience during this episode to be raw and truthful because being a livestock fitter as a career can be tough but if you want it bad enough, you can be good. Throughout the episode, he talks about his experience with Stock Show U and teaching the youth about clipping livestock.

Wiley proudly talks about Sullivans Supply and the equipment you will need to clip and fit cattle. He also highlights the joy of taking families to the backdrop, a rewarding feeling of cattle fitting. Wiley’s experiences have made him successful in this field, and he is eager to share how others can achieve it.

In episode two, we dive into the world of cattle fitting through the eyes of youth and passion. At just 21 years old, Mr. Dalton McKee has already made his mark in the industry, having discovered his passion for fitting cattle at 19. His story is evidence of the potential and excitement that young people can bring to this field.

What Drives McKee

McKee has truly had an incredible run in his career as a cattle fitter. If anyone knows the ins and outs of being successful in today’s world and making it to the backdrop, it is him. He resides in Iola, Texas, but in reality, he resides anywhere there is a cow show.

Traveling one show after another helping families make it to the backdrop, is what drives him in this industry. He is here to make cattle better in and out of the show ring but what might McKee have to offer in this episode?

Words of advice from McKee

  • Never say no to an opportunity
  • Don’t ever let someone outwork you
  • Connections are key
  • Let success be your noise
  • Find your people and make your mark
  • Know your information before you decide to speak
  • Don’t embarrass the people that make you who you are

McKee’s knowledge comes from the two cattle companies that have made him who he is today. Lucherk Cattle is where he learned his toughest lesson and Diamond J Simmentals is his home, where he is now the herdsman.

McKee has stories to tell and a lot of advice and is confident in himself that he still has so much more to learn. He is known for his fabulous back legs and his insane way of making the belly of a cow look incredible.

On this episode I am talking with my friend Jackie about the book called Love Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood. We end up talking about how romance books are very different than what she has read, which is mystery, fantasy, and thriller. This episode is all about talking about the plot of the book Love Theoretically. If you want to follow along to the plot of the romance book in this episode here is a link to the book: https://a.co/d/4eqJAI2.

My review of the book:

I gave this book 5 stars. Awarding it a well-deserved 5 stars, I found myself thoroughly engrossed in Hazelwood’s expertly crafted storyline. One of the book’s standout features was undoubtedly its masterful curation of plot twists, keeping me on the edge of my seat with each turn of the page. From unexpected revelations to heartwarming moments, the narrative unfolded with a perfect blend of suspense and emotional resonance. What truly set “Love Theoretically” apart was its skillful portrayal of romance. While romance novels often tread familiar ground, Hazelwood breathed new life into the genre. She did this with her nuanced character development and authentic relationships. Despite the occasional predictability in the romantic arc, the chemistry between the characters felt genuine and heartfelt. Due to this, it drew me deeper into their journey. Moreover, the underlying plot behind the romance was a shining example of Hazelwood’s storytelling prowess. Rich with complexity and depth, it offered a refreshing departure from conventional love stories, keeping me invested in the narrative until the very end. With each subplot expertly woven into the fabric of the main storyline, the novel unfolded like a carefully orchestrated symphony of emotions and intrigue. This is a photo of when I was reading the book! If I were to nitpick, the only aspect that came close to detracting from my enjoyment was the slight predictability in the romantic developments. However, this minor flaw was easily overshadowed by the book’s many strengths, particularly its compelling plot and well-crafted characters. In conclusion, “Love Theoretically” is a standout addition to the romance genre, showcasing Ali Hazelwood’s talent for crafting captivating stories that resonate with readers on multiple levels. Whether you’re a die-hard romance fan or simply looking for an engaging read, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Here’s my review of the book before you dive into the episode of Read Between the Wines:

This book got a 5 star rating from me.

Wildfire by Hannah Grace earns a solid 5-star rating from me, and for good reason. From the moment I cracked it open, I was captivated, swept into a narrative that I couldn’t tear myself away from until the very end. Grace’s writing style is incredibly engaging, making the book a seamless, one-sitting read.

What impressed me most was the book’s impeccable readability. Every page was a testament to Grace’s skill in crafting a story that not only holds your attention but refuses to let go. It’s rare to find a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, but Wildfire does just that.

The storyline is masterfully constructed, with each plot twist and character development adding layer depth to the narrative. Speaking of characters, they’re not just well-written; they’re fully realized individuals whose actions drive the story forward. By the end, I felt like I knew them personally, which is a testament to Grace’s talent in character development.

From the explosive beginning to the satisfying conclusion, Wildfire is a rollercoaster ride of emotion and suspense. Every revelation adds another piece to the puzzle. In this episode, I’m joined by my best friend Jamie for a lively discussion about “My Favorite Half-Night Stand” by Christina Lauren. Together, we talked about the intricate portrayal of romance within the pages of the book. With its friends-to-lovers plotline we explore how the dynamics between characters evolve. Tune in as we dissect the plot, unraveling its twists and turns. As well as, sharing our thoughts on what makes this novel a compelling read. This episode is dedicated to the plot of “My Favorite Half-Night Stand.” If you want to follow along to the plot of the romance book in this episode here is a link to the book: https://a.co/d/5XBd8W9

Here is my review of the book:

This book earned a 4 1/2 star rating.

“My Favorite Half-Night Stand” by Christina Lauren captivates readers and justifies its 4 1/2 star rating. What distinguishes this book is its construction of tension. Additionally, the alternating perspectives draw readers into a richly layered narrative, offering multiple angles through which to experience the story. From the opening pages, a sense of anticipation propels you forward, eagerly uncovering the truth behind the characters’ tangled emotions and relationships.

However, while Lauren is renowned for crafting intricate plots, “My Favorite Half-Night Stand” occasionally is overcomplicated. At times, the complexity of the story can be overwhelming, requiring careful attention to keep track of all the moving parts. Nevertheless, within this intricacy lies one standout moment – the “oh no” scene – that delivers a gut-wrenching punch you won’t forget. It’s the kind of moment that leaves you breathless from its emotional impact and eager to see the negative fallout.

In essence, this book is a rollercoaster of a read, with exhilarating highs and the occasional dizzying loop. While it demands a bit more mental gymnastics than some readers are accustomed to, the payoff is worth it.

In conclusion, Lauren’s skillful storytelling and knack for crafting unforgettable moments ensure that this book stands out in its genre.

If you ask someone what the top priority of a farmer or rancher is, you will likely get mixed feelings and misconceptions.  But a farmer’s top priority is the welfare of their animals. A farmer’s top priority is to tend to their animals to give them the best quality of life possible.

As we all know, within any industry or operation, some people witness and experience things first-hand and behind the scenes. Some people witness just a glimpse or a glance of what may be occurring. This can often lead to misconceptions and misunderstandings.

Misconceptions: Clearing the Crop Circles of Confusion

In this episode, I will talk to a former livestock showman and cotton, wheat, sorghum, and corn farmer about her top priority as a pig and crop farmer.  Addie Hicks is a 5th-generation farmer from Canyon, Texas. Hicks is a current Texas A&M University student in the Agricultural and Life Sciences Department. Hicks will share just how important the health and safety of her animals on the farm is to her.

We will talk about the importance of animal safety and welfare, also acknowledging the misconceptions about a farmer’s top priorities and how they can be misleading.

How Can We Bring Awareness to the Agriculture Industry?

As agriculturalists, we cannot control what outsiders see or believe about the industry, but we can educate them and encourage them to dive deeper into the industry and see all of the good it has to offer.

Additionally, we can also educate outsiders and bring awareness to what truly occurs on a farm, ranch, and the industry as a whole daily.

As the backbone of America, the agriculture industry provides the clothes on our backs and the food on our tables.  Furthermore, as agriculturalists, we need to do better in educating outsiders on what the industry truly is about. We also need to show that our animals are taken care of. The health and safety of our animals is our top priority.

We learn by seeing, doing, and engaging.

If you ask someone if small family-owned and operated farms contribute to the food industry at a large scale, you will get a variety of responses. However, small family-owned and operated farms play a vital role in our food industry.

How Do Small Farms Feed the World?

Nearly 90% of farming operations are small-scale farms.  While one small farm does not contribute significantly to the food industry, combined they make up a large portion of the food industry.

In this episode, I will talk to a former livestock showman and current show cattle raiser, Parker Wilson.  Wilson is from Navasota, Texas, and is a senior at Texas A&M University.  Wilson will graduate in May with a degree in Agricultural Communications and Journalism and Agricultural Leadership and Development.

Wilson is an agriculturalist who raises show cattle.  Her family owns and operates a small cattle operation.

We will talk about how small farming operations and businesses contribute to the food industry.  The beef cattle industry provides beef locally and globally.

Why are Small Farms Essential for Food Security?

So while small farms and ranches may appear to be small, they are mighty.  Small farms and ranches play a crucial role in certain markets.  Equally, small-scale farms are essential for diversity and food resilience.

Furthermore, Wilson was able to contribute to the food industry by showing and raising market steers.  Within her 10-year show career, Wilson raised 70 steers.  Raising livestock is a cornerstone of the food industry.

Again, small-scale farms often focus on the quality and sustainability of their crops and/or livestock.  They foster strong ties between communities.  In addition, these farms also provide food directly to consumers.

Therefore, not only do these small farms contribute to the food industry, but they also educate the youth and bring awareness to the agriculture industry.  Lastly, small farms are the root of the food industry and are essential to food security.
