All good things… final thoughts

What a ride. When we started this revamp of Radio Broadcasting 5 years ago, who thought that we’d have over 100 students create over 250 episodes on countless topics. Here are some of my “final thoughts”.

Final thoughts

Every semester we’d stumble along, learning new things:

  • Audio editing
  • Sound quality engineering
  • Interviewing techniques
  • Our own voice quality
  • How much music and sound can add
  • New genres and new podcasts

Students in the class always to amazed me–their creativity, their passion, their questions and willingness to try something new. We developed solid editing, interviewing, critical listening and storytelling skills. Also, we enjoyed learning from each other,

As I put together these final thoughts, I now recall life lived–the highs, lows and everything in between. Furthermore, I’m honored to see (and hear) from students past and present who’s professional and personal lives were affected from being part of the class.

The times they are a changing…

bald white guy in glasses reflecting on final thoughts for the class he's teaching

BTW, this final “promo” features something that we talked about in the last week of class–the role of technology. However, the role of communicators will change but telling good stories won’t–even with the rise of AI.

So, this promo “thank you”, was all AI-generated, except for the script. I wrote the script, but AI generated everything else.

  • Cover art: Microsoft AI Image creator (prompt: “podcasting class with a bald white guy in glasses teaching.”)
  • Voices: ElevenLabs.io (AI voices – Chris, Patrick, Emily, Matilde and all “read” the same script)
  • Ambient Music: Loudly AI Music Generator (prompt: ambient cinematic)

What’s next?

Look for a new Podcasts for Aggies as this class evolves into a broader digital storytelling course. Podcasts themselves have grown out of just “audio-only”; they now embrace and engage across social media as well as in the video space. So, this new course will take a look at those spaces and works to show how storytelling influences and is influenced by these new media.

Welcome back to “I Call Shotgun!” the podcast where the passenger gets to pick the topic and the destination.

In this episode, Kristen changes up who she rides with as it isn’t a close friend of hers, but rather someone closer: her parent.

Being away from home, it comes as no surprise what a college student might be feeling. There are many ups and downs that come with being in college hundreds of miles away. These experiences are unique but similar among people in multiple ways. Joining Kristen for this ride is her father, who is a former student of Texas A&M University and knows all too well the struggle of leaving home to the highlight that is becoming an Aggie. Kristen interviews her father with the topic of conversation being that of sending your kid away not only to college but to one that is six hours away from home.

Together, they share their unique perspectives on the experience of going to college far from home on “I Call Shotgun!”. The parent gets to speak about their worries about being far from their child and how they stay connected while Kristen adds a little bit of that student perspective. As the car cruises down the roads of College Station, the conversation shifts from advice to jokes, making this a lighthearted episode of the “I Call Shotgun!” podcast. Through both of their stories, we get a glimpse into the complex world that is college life. College life is where students and parents alike navigate new challenges and forge deeper connections.

Grab a seat and join us on this ride as we explore the ups and downs of college far from home. Whether you’re a student, a parent, or curious about the college experience, “I Call Shotgun!” is the perfect podcast!

There’s no real destination in mind as the three travel around main roads and back roads, dark paths and neon signs, to do nothing but get some good discussions in.

With her close friends, it is no surprise how long the both of them can talk. The three are able to share their stories about their first two years in college at Texas A&M University. The three are connected through the FLO that they are all a part of, which becomes the main topic of conversation. At the top of a parking garage, the three speak about their experiences, how they ended up there, and how they feel about the school year coming to an end. The Fact of the Matter: Episode 2 with Max Wright

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

For the second and final episode, I talk with Max Wright, the unsung hero of Texas A&M University football. Max Wright is a sixth year returner to the football team. He is a tight end and effective at his job. He has made big plays in time of need and seems to always step up to the task at hand. His unwavering loyalty and love for the Texas A&M football team is known by all. I want to know what makes Wright such an outstanding performer and great teammate. To learn more about him, we will discuss what part mental health has played in his career at Texas A&M.

Knowing that Wright has a passion for mental health as I do, the questions will be more specific and hopefully lead to sharing stories. We will dive into the topics as they come up in conversation such as:

  • What is something you had to learn over the years that benefitted your mental health?
  • Were there any hard lessons or times that affected your performance on the field?
  • What sparked your passion for mental health?
  • Being a leader on the team, do you find yourself having to teach the younger players?
  • If so, do any pertain to mental health or how they view life?
  • What is one thing you will takeaway from your time at Texas A&M and carry with you after graduation?
  • What lessons have you learned that apply to everyday life?

Wright’s passion for mental health makes for easier conversation. Knowing we have something in common, I plan for more in depth conversation with him. I aim to provide sustenance that can be applied to life as a whole. Wright carries a supporting role among his teammate and is not afraid to show his love for the team. I want to know what makes him such a supportive person. That kind of passion is not seen in many people and that makes Wright special. His experience and knowledge of the team benefit him in his leadership position. Although his seniority ranks him higher, his teammates respect him for the man he is, not his title.

Maintaining a great mental health is a struggle many people face. Combine that with being a newly recruited Texas A&M football player and you are stepping into daunting territory. This is the place to learn about mental health among student athletes. To start this journey, who better to deep dive into mental health among student athletes with than Colton Thomasson?

Thomasson is a freshman football player at Texas A&M University. He graduated Smithson Valley High School a semester early to join the team in time for spring ball of 2023. He is a 6’7″, 315 pound offensive lineman. Few athletes have the ability to best him physically, but I want to know if any mental battles have ever defeated him.

As the first of two interviews, Thomasson and I will discuss life as a new recruit:

  • What is it like being ‘fresh meat’?
  • What is it like forming friendships with the other players?
  • What goals has he laid out for himself and how does he plan on achieving them?
  • What, if any, obstacles or struggles have presented themselves so far?
  • Is there anything in specific he does to maintain a healthy mental state?

Life as a collegiate athlete is hectic when considering how many responsibilities you have. But it’s also controlled, organized, and largely routine based. I plan to find out what routine(s) Colton has set for himself that allow him to stay focused and healthy, physically and mentally.

My personal experience will also play apart in our discussion. I was once that new recruit Thomasson is now. Life was difficult and I had troubles finding a functional routine that I enjoyed. Unfortunately, I never figured it out. I had to stop playing for the sake of my mental health. Now, Colton is at the stage in his life where I once was. Join me on Episode 1 to hear what Colton has to say about his new life!

Okay, okay, okay. After the last episode, I’m sure we can all agree that having a twin makes for an exciting experience. So now, on Episode 2 of Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss, I’d like to talk to one of my friends that I met from my own organization.

Nadia Abusaid is a sophomore Journalism major from Houston, Texas who is double minoring in Communication and Horticulture. We first met in the Student American Institute of Floral Design organization, where we are both currently members. Both of us were inspired by this organization to add Horticulture as our minor. We are both also pursuing a certificate from Texas A&M in Floral Design.

In this next episode, we’ll be talking about one of my favorite things to gossip about. Dating. Arguably one of the most talked about topics of girls in our generation, and women everywhere in general. Finding someone is not always easy (I can definitely speak from experience), and everyone’s luck with dating is different.

Dating is something that is a significant part of the majority of college people’s lives. Therefore, it is also something that can play a pretty big role in mental health. Since there is a lot of growing up that happens in college, it is interesting to see how dating and relationships start to change.

For this episode, Nadia and I will be exploring relationships and how they fit in to the modern college experience. Since we both have had different experiences during our time navigating the college dating scene, we’ll be taking a look at each of our dating experiences and comparing our dating encounters to each other’s.

Dating for marriage. Casual dating. Maybe even some relationship advice, but definitely a lot of dating tries and fails. All this and more on this episode with Nadia and me.

Introducing to you for the very first episode of Gatekeep, Gaslight, Girlboss *cue incredibly dramatic drumroll please* Bailee and Breanna Chavez!! The three of us have been friends for about seven years now, so we have quite literally been with each other through pretty much every up, every down, and whatever else is in between.

What makes the two of them different from most other women in college is that they are twins.  We can all agree that having a built-in study buddy would be pretty nice. This is definitely something about them that I have always been slightly envious of.

We all graduated from the same small-town high school in East Texas in May of 2021. Following graduation, we came to Texas A&M together later that fall. They are both sophomore Nutrition majors and are heavily involved in multiple Nutrition and Dietetics organizations on campus. Breanna is a member of the Terry Scholar Student Organization, while both Bailee and I are a part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholars.

I want to know how their lives differ from my perspective and experiences. I also will be discussing how we have changed mentally since we came to Texas A&M and how we have adjusted to the reality of adulting.

Both of them are high-achieving students and are involved with multiple organizations. I really want to delve deeper into how they are taking the time to balance school with their social lives. Which I would argue is one of the more challenging things to do once you’re in college. In the end, I want to ask the real question almost everyone undoubtedly wants to know. How much coffee do they drink?

Calling all muckrakers! Your favorite muck-free podcast, Don’t Be A Stick In The Muck, is glad to present a new episode; The P Word!

Before college I didn’t know the first thing about what goes into The P Word…Yes, that P word…Politics.

In this episode we bring in Political Science student, and soon to be graduate, Jackson Hennigan to talk more about how he got involved in this major and why it is important to our society.

To learn more about what goes into this dense topic, these are some action steps that I would encourage you to take:

  •  Politics can be tricky, and to determine whether or not you want to get involved is the very first step you have to determine.
    • This could involve some pretty intense soul-searching, so I would do this before getting involved in anything too serious.
  • Just because your family members have a certain political affiliation does not mean that you, by default, will have to join this same political affiliation.
    • However, by looking at what your family’s political affiliations are, you can set a basis for your own.
    • Traditionally, our values growing up help to shape our values into adulthood.
  • Look into what you are passionate about and do some research on what legislation is being passed towards this action.
  • If the thought of politics still seriously freaks you out, check out this cheat sheet: Politics for Dummies.

We hope to serve as your guide for taking those baby steps towards becoming an active member of today’s political society. We aren’t saying you have to agree with our values, our political affiliations, or anything as a whole. We just ask that you bring an open mind!

Calling all muckrakers! Your favorite muck-free podcast, Don’t Be A Stick In The Muck, is glad to present a new episode; gym rats!

I’m sure you’ve been curious about what goes on in the mind of gym rats…aka weightlifters. Why they choose to do calorie deficits in a ‘cut’ or a calorie surplus in a ‘bulk’? How much planning goes into their meal preps or workout routine.

In today’s episode we bring local Aggie gym rat, Gunner Purcell, on the show in hopes to talk about the fitness industry and how it has appealed to college students.

To learn more about what goes into it, you need to understand a few key components:

  •  A calorie deficit, also known as a cut, is when you are having an intake of calories that is less than or equal to what you are burning in a day.
  • A calorie surplus, also known as a bulk, is when you are having an intake of calories that is more than or equal to what you are burning in a day.
  • In order to plan effective workouts, it is important to know which muscle groups you are targeting.
    • I.e. push versus pull days, and the importance of alternating.
  • Calories have gained a bad reputation within the fitness/weight loss industry.
    • It is up to you and your goals to determine how to plan them into your meal prepping routine.
  • Yes, going to the gym 3-5 days a week is hard. But your goals will determine your activity level, and it is healthier to determine what this will be ahead of time.
    • You must plan this before going into the gym

In episode 2 “Riding Solo” I break down the previous episode with guest Jake Richardson and discuss what is next.

After the brief breakdown, I will discuss my opinions on many different things, and give my thoughts of where the show livestock world is at.

This will not be a particularly exhilarating episode, but more so a chance to get to know me, and what I do as someone who is deeply engrained into this crazy world that myself and others love so much.

Why ride solo?

I think it important for the you, the audience to know me better. This will hopefully give everyone a more detailed understanding maybe of why I am the way I am. Hopefully listening will be even more enjoyable when taking in some of the things that are on these episodes, and why I choose the guests I choose.

I genuinely hope the audience understands how much I truly love this industry, and also at times how one could loathe it. Understanding me, and my tendencies will most definitely allow everyone to not be so confused, or thrown off by some comments made.

I quote movies, comedians, and even things said behind closed doors. Thats what makes this unique, because even though we say some things on this show that may be a tad controversial, there is no doubt it is all meant very lightly. I do this because I love it, and it is my idea of fun, because if everything was always serious, Everybody would think I was a robot.

Welcome to The Crying Hole and our “Pilot” episode with Jake Richardson.

We will have discussions about all things within the livestock show world. Although it may seem dominated by  the sheep and goat industry, we still give our takes throughout the rest of the industry.

Be prepared for some takes that may be a little more “out there” as we hope to talk about things that others may dance around sometimes, or maybe just be scared to bring up in general. We dig in, and get to discussing the good, the bad, and the ugly of that what’s what, and the who’s who of the livestock show world.

“Pilot” With Jake P Richardson

In the “Pilot” episode of The Crying Hole, I sit down with longtime friend Jake Richardson, and catch just another “conversation”. Although everything can’t make the cut for the final edit, I am confident there will be plenty of hot takes, laughs, and even a couple conspiracies that will make your head spin.

We discuss everything from this past major show season, the drama, the winners, and what we look forward to in this upcoming sale season. We even get into some predictions and thoughts on what the 2023-2024 major and national stock shows could look like later this year.

Don’t Forget!

Whatever you do, mark your calendars, set your alarms, and be prepared for the absolute worst, because the “Pilot”  is guaranteed to have something everyone will make their head spin at the sheer ridiculousness that will be talked about and discussed throughout the episode!

Taylor Swift as an Activist

In 2003, the Dixie Chicks were, in today’s terms, “canceled.” The trio girl band criticized then-president George W. Bush for his decisions regarding the war in Iraq. “Just so you know, we are ashamed the president of the United State is from Texas,” shared Natalie Maines in between songs at the London concert that marked the end of the bands’ success.

Their critique of the Republican president did not land well with the country band’s primarily right-leaning audience, resulting in the Dixie Chicks 2006 album failing comparatively to previous releases. But the women stood by their statements, pushing the envelope for female artists’ ability to speak out on politics. For the most part, the band went silent after 2006, and their story made many major female artists hesitant to share their political views for fear of being “canceled,” just like the Dixie Chicks.

That is until 2018, when music idol Taylor Swift abandoned the apolitical norms of musicians by endorsing Tennessee Democratic candidates in the 2018 election cycle. Through her social media, Taylor Swift advocated for the candidates, basing her voting on her personal beliefs and values, and encouraged others to evaluate candidates critically.

Since that first endorsement, Taylor Swift has not shied away from sharing her political beliefs on many controversial and pressing issues in our country, including LGBTQ+ rights, gun safety, abortion access, systemic racism and more. In the midst of her activism, she has remarkably retained her fan base and even gained more “Swifties” for her bold advocacy as a female in an industry that has not historically been kind to artists being politically active.

Join me as we discuss how Taylor Swift has been able to rewrite the script for activism for females in the music industry during episode 2 of 1989 to Forever during Season 4 of  Podcasts for Aggies, available on Apple Music and Spotify.

Through the Eras, How Taylor Swift Has Escaped Expiration Dates

When I was eight years old, I received my first physical Taylor Swift: Fearless. I vividly remember unwrapping the CD case and shrieking with excitement. I had been routinely listening to Taylor Swift’s debut album since its release in 2006; I even had the “Our Song” music video downloaded on my iPod Nano.

More than a decade later, I am still a steadfast fan, also known as a “Swiftie” in the realm of Taylor Swift-obsessed people. While my loyalty to her music has remained, Taylor Swift’s discography has veered far away from my early favorite country songs about young teenage heartbreak. In more ways than one, I grew up with Taylor Swift. My music taste changed and developed alongside her as she strayed away from her country music, a genre she was successful and comfortable with, and into the pop music world. My friends would often ask me if I was still a fan of Taylor Swift despite her music changing, as most of them said they only liked her “old music.” For me, though, I was infatuated with Taylor Swift as a person just as much as a musician. The genre of her music was a small detail in my overall love for a smart, independent and creative role model.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one who sees Taylor Swift’s impact beyond the music industry. In the first episode of 1989 to Forever, we will explore how she has escaped expiration dates by pivoting her music, all while garnering fan loyalty and respect. Even if you aren’t a “Swiftie” like me, 1989 to Forever will undoubtedly shine a light on how Taylor Swift has set herself apart from the rest and has made an impact on American history, not just the music industry.

There are many checklist college students have to help prepare them for their future jobs. In the construction industry, companies are always looking for students who have had an internship with companies. Internships with certain companies can help you easily land a great job out of college. Being an intern can be very stressful, imagine leaving your college for the whole semester away from all your friends and get thrown into a heavy work loaded job. That’s why my special guest Macie Mclean is perfect for this episode.

Interns in the construction take on a heavy work load as the rest. They are constantly needing to learn and keep up with the pace and try not to slow anyone down. The expectations are very high for you, even tho you’re a college student. As an intern you help both the project manager and the superintendent. This is because once you start working full time you choose which path you want to go. Macie Mclean is a my co-worker and an intern as well as me. She is a current Texas A&M student and a senior as well. She is a intern with me at Manhattan Construction. It’ll be interesting to dive into her mental health and see how she’s doing so far and how she thinks she’ll be doing with some big challenges coming ahead.

For the final interview, Macie and I will be discussing:

  • Stress that comes with being an intern senior year?
  • Goals in the construction industry?
  • Any stress living away from her fiancé for 8 months when she starts full time?
  • How is she doing mentally so far?
  • How does she balance school and work?

My personal experience so far in this industry will be apart of the podcast series. I worked all summer long and currently am working my senior year of my last semester in college. I haven’t been in the industry long and I can see my mental health depleting so far. It’ll be nice to learn from my co-worker and friend to see how she is managing in this industry and see if we can help one another.

Join into this episode as Macie and I dive into the blueprints.

This is Macie on her recent internship in Dallas.

There are many people who find work miserable or too straining on themselves. The construction industry is a field where many of it’s workers are always stressed out physically and mentally. But there are those who seem to always be positive even when it’s a stressful time. A perfect edition to episode 2 is having Curry Mapes on the podcast series, who is the lead Superintendent on the job.

For many who don’t know superintendents are always on the job site watching the building progress. This means they have to constantly make a new schedule all the time, which is very time consuming and hard. Another difficult task is to be at the job when the subcontractors are pouring concrete. This means Curry is at the job site at 1am and won’t leave till late in the afternoon. Curry mapes is 28-years-old Texas A&M alumni who has been in the industry for years. He currently works for Manhattan Construction. I’m going to be diving into this mental health to see how’s he doing which such a crazy workload.

Being the second interviewed, Curry and I will be discussing:

  • Stress that comes with being a Superintendent?
  • Does he love bouncing around job-to-job never having a permanent “home”?
  • How is he doing so well mentally?
  • What has been his favorite jobs he has worked on?
  • What are his end goals in the industry?

Life as a construction worker is very stressful for many individuals. Not having a lot of sleep is a main factor for many workers. But Curry always seems to be in high spirits. I’m very excited to interview Curry to see what he does to help his mental health be so great.

My personal experience so far in this industry will be apart of the podcast series. I worked all summer long and currently am working my senior year of my last semester in college. I haven’t been in the industry long and I can see my mental health depleting so far. Getting advice from someone who has been in the industry since college will be very fun to learn from.

Join into this episode as Curry and I dive into blueprints.

This is a pour, Curry would need to supervise it.

Episode 2: From Europe to Texas A&M

Throughout our lives, especially as young adults, we are faced by constant change and uncertainty of what the future holds. Moving from Europe to the US for college education is a decision that can be both exciting and overwhelming all at once. It is a big step, but it can also be the experience of a lifetime.

Many college students, from the United States and all over the world, often day-dream about the experience of studying abroad in Europe. This being said, it will be interesting to explore this POV from young adults that left their lives in Europe to come find their American Dream. So, don’t miss out in this episode as we dive deep into this topic and more here at Aggie International Talk.

Meet our guests

Pierre Louis Carminati in Europe  Alex Garriga in Europe

Our first guest is Pierre Louis Carminati, a Master student from France. He graduated from EM Strasbourg Business School for his undergraduate. Shortly after working for a bank for a few months, he quickly realized he wants to pursue a career in the United States. He moved to College Station, not knowing what to expect, drawn by the prestige of Mays Business School and the possibilities getting a degree from Texas A&M could offer to his career. As of right now, he is navigating the job searching process and looking to stay and work in the US after he finishes his Master in Finance.

Lastly, Alex Garriga, from Barcelona, Spain, is doing a Master in Communications. He moved to College Station in 2021. Alex was originally only staying for one year as an exchange student and ended up staying longer here at Texas A&M as is hoping to find a job here in the US and stay close to the area.

In this episode of The Side Gig, we will be meeting with the woman behind the Wandering Maverick Boutique, Kodye Neel.

Kodye started her small business while attending Texas A&M University and has developed Wandering Maverick into a brand that supports women in agriculture, advocates for agriculture, and supports agriculture education! She now offers internships and scholarships through her boutique.

After success, it can become difficult to keep up with marketing, producing products, managing money, and moving forward with growing your business. With this, mistakes happen and are a part of the journey. However, there are always tips and tricks that business owners wish they would have known before entering into the industry.

In this chat, Kodye will share her tips and tricks on business management, some of the things she wishes she would have known before pursuing her passion, and lessons she has learned during her time growing Wandering Maverick Boutique.

We will also talk about how to handle burnout after you reach success. When we feel burnout, it is not because we no longer enjoy what we are doing, but because we have been working so hard. How do you find the work-life balance? We will answer this and more in this episode.

We will also discuss how these tips apply to all sorts of businesses whether you are offering a product or a service, as well as communicating the importance of maintaining your brand as you grow.

Join us for this coming episode as we empower women, support agriculture, and advocate for small business during, The Side Gig.

When starting a business, there are so many things to consider from funding, taxes, branding, and more. This might seem intimidating at first, but don’t let it deter you from starting your journey.

In this episode, we will discuss the do’s and don’ts of small businesses and cover the basics from branding to business practices. We will be meeting with my best friend and the owner of EKWesternDesigns, Emmy Walley, to talk about the journey of small business, changing your brand, and discovering your identity.

We cover the pillars of defining your brand:

  • What will you be selling? A service or product?
  • Where will you be selling your product? Online, trade shows, brick-and-mortar?
  • Why do you want to start this business? Is there a need? Is this your passion?

Drawing your business plan:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • Will you register your business as a sole proprietorship or an LLC?
  • How much do you hope to make? How long will it take?

The College-business Balance

We will also be diving into the college-business balance with my friend and the owner of Walking P Knives, Evan Purviance, to discuss how to manage your passion project and your school work. College students are often under a lot of pressure to excel academically, stay active in extracurricular organizations, and maintain a social life. When you start a small business, it adds to your plate but is so worthwhile.

The Comparison Game

As small business owners, we often enter into saturated markets as small fish in the big sea. With this, it is more important than ever to create your vision and pursue it. Comparison is something that we often do without thinking. As a child, we notice when someone gets the bigger piece of cake or the better grade on a quiz. When managing a small business, it is easy to feel that other people have it all figured out. We often compare ourselves to those who have more experience, and different resources, and took a completely different path than us.

Through these talks, we will be facing all of these challenges and tasks head-on and talking, The Side Gig.

Howdy and welcome back to your favorite fairy tale podcast, Fairy Tell-Tales! It’s your host Delilah and I’m very excited for our discussion about one of my favorite tales. But first, let me remind you of a couple of things:

  1. As I learned in my fairy tale class, older versions of fairy tales were not intended for children. This means that there is often material that is violent or inappropriate for children.
  2. Some tales have more versions than others and therefore have more media and material about them.

Today’s episode will be featuring a tale that has a violent backstory. While it is not anywhere near the most violent or graphic of fairy tales I’ve read, it might have the ability to change your perspective on a nostalgic movie.

Fairy Tell-Tales, Episode 3 Breakdown:

Black and white drawing of a ballerina en pointe doing an arabesque.

In this episode, we’re talking about one of my favorite movies as a kid, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses from Mattel Entertainment. It came out in 2006 and I could not get enough of it. I remember getting the doll from the movie and I was sooo excited.

So, I understand that not everyone will have the time to sit down and watch a full length movie. I don’t technically have the time but because of this project I get to call it homework, which is amazing. Instead of asking you to watch the movie, I’ll include a quick run down of the plot within the podcast and include where you can find the movie below in the “Links” section.

Like I stated earlier, some fairy tales have a lot more written about them than others. This one in particular has very little and what I could find mostly did not seem credible. What I have been able to figure out is that the older version we will be discussing is from Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. There is a link to the story below. According to the Sur La Lune website, that is the oldest written (and maybe only written) version of the tale. I will also have that webpage linked below for you to read if you want to get more insight on to what history about the tale is known.

Can’t wait to dive into the story with you on the newest episode of the Fairy Tell-Tales podcast!

Howdy! My name is Delilah and I’m your host on the new fairy tale podcast, Fairy Tell-Tales. I’ve always been an avid reader, but after taking a fairy tale course in college, I became more interested in this realm of literature. Since taking that course, I’ve been able to realize how much pop culture is influenced by older fairy tales.

As I learned in my course, fairy tales can often work as a form of social commentary. We can take our modern fairy tales and view them through the lens and influence of the older versions of the same tale. From there, we can reveal almost entirely different stories than the ones we currently accept based solely on entertainment value. This season we’re going to be looking at examples of fairy tales in pop culture within the context of older versions of the same fairy tale.

Fairy Tell-Tales, Episode 1 Breakdown:

For episode one, we will be discussing three Cinderella tales, including Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Bejeweled”. First, if you haven’t seen the video, stop what you’re doing and go watch it right now. Not only is it an actually stunning masterpiece, but it’s also crucial for our discussion that you be able to recall some elements of the video. Whether or not you’ve seen it before or you’ll be watching it for the first time, there are a few points that I want you to pay special attention to.

  1. The comment at the beginning about the talent competition
  2. Cinderella’s performance
  3.  The dragons on the castle at the endClock

The older tales we will be discussing in this episode are Charles Perrault’s “The Little Glass Slipper” and Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s “Cinderella”. Below, you can find links for the music video and both of the other versions. There is also a link to “A Girl, A Shoe, A Prince: An Endlessly Evolving Cinderella” written by Linda Holmes for NPR. This is great to read if you want to learn more about the history of Cinderella and different versions of her tale. There is also a link to more information on Katherine Orenstein.

I’m excited for our discussion and can’t wait to be your new favorite fairy tale podcast!

Pick Up Strangers with Ashley – Episode 2

Welcome to Untold Stories from the Backseat! Here we will chat with local rideshare drivers and dive into what it’s like to pick up strangers!

The Celebrity Magnet, Ashley.

Although she has not been driving for rideshare very long, Ashley Sulzbach has already had quite the experience. I would put money on the idea that she has probably had the wildest celebrity sighting out of all College Station rideshare drivers.

Without a doubt, the most fun story to listen to from Ashley was about the time she picked up Playboi Carti. From having to sign an NDA to Playboi himself insulting her car, it was wild from start to finish.

Ashley is no stranger to her fur children!

Ashley makes the most of her nights out behind the wheel. To my surprise, she said that 98% of drunk people are highly entertaining. She makes sure that everyone who gets into her car has an opportunity to have an absolute blast!

As an added bonus, we also get to hear about the time she defended Cody Johnson’s music to Parker McCollum himself.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Picking up Strangers

Ashley shared one experience with us that really puts into perspective how dangerous rideshare driving can be. One evening she picked up a man that put her in a highly uncomfortable situation, ultimately pressing charges against him. This shouldn’t happen to anyone, but unfortunately is the chance you take when picking up strangers.

On the opposite side of that situation, we also chatted about how the easiest way to earn your driver’s respect is to do just that- be respectful. These cars are not only used to pick up strangers. They’re the car they take to the grocery store, drive their kids in, and live in.

Welcome to Untold Stories from the Backseat! Here we will chat with local rideshare drivers and dive into what it’s like to pick up strangers. Ubering home has never been this exciting!

Ubering home with Amy.

Amy Cole is a longtime resident of College Station, a devoted wife and mother, and probably the reason I or anyone in my friend group isn’t dead or in jail. She joins us as our first guest in episode one of Untold Stories from the Backseat!

When I decided to do this podcast Amy was the first person I thought of. I knew her down-for-anything attitude and experience of almost 11,000 trips with Uber would be just what I needed to get the ball rolling.

Amy and I go all the way back to my freshman year. She has seen or heard quite literally everything in between my little group of regulars and me. She watched us transition from wild freshman headed to Shiner Park to being home by eleven after a few rounds of pool. I’ve even babysat her kids in a last-minute arrangement so she could go out to celebrate her birthday. Every time we are in her car, she is eager to hear the latest gossip, and we are equally excited to update her.

Ubering to northgate with Amy!

What to expect.

In this episode, Amy goes over what it’s really like to Uber in College Station. Amy had several interesting stories to share with us. We learned how she earned herself the nickname of the ‘College Station Mom.’ This along with the time she had a man drug out of her backseat by cops made for a quite a few laughs. She also expressed how rideshare is an escape from the stay-at-home mom life where she gets to interact with adults. This along with making money makes it all worthwhile for her.

Welcome back to Promise Keepers, the podcast! I hope you enjoyed our little introduction conversation and really gained insight on noticing the signs and taking them seriously.

Alvah was such an impactful and inspiring person to co-host episode one with me. You got to listen to her struggles she faces even today with my almost permanent decision from temporary pain. She was able to be raw with you all as she opened up about her point of view from that night, and the trauma it has now caused her.

What to Expect in Episode 2 of Promise Keepers:

Next episode, you’re in for a treat. Promise Keepers is going to gain insight on the aftermath of my decision. We are going to get into detail about what that hospital experience was like, the flood of emotions, and all the clear ways God was speaking to me, and everyone around me in those moments.

I will dive into my revelation and what that looks like. Once someone hits rock bottom, there is no where else to go but up. I could have looked at Alvah saving my life as a negative, constantly living in the past, wishing outcomes might have been different, full of anxiety or depressed.

Stop Living Your Life Lukewarm:

Instead, I saw this was another chance. God is not done with me yet. I was living my life lukewarm. Adjusting the word to fit my agenda. It is my time to be hot. “So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth,” Revelation 3:16.

God would rather us be completely blind to Him and His word, rather than knowing of Him and  still choosing to seek Him, only when it’s convenient. Before, I would say I missed Jesus by 18 inches. that is the approximate length from my head to my heart. I want to share the ways I am ensuring a real relationship with God and I want to offer that for listeners as well.

Tune in this week to AGCJ366.tamu.edu for some fruitful conversation!

Introducing “Promise Keepers,” a personal podcast that takes listeners on a journey through the ups and downs of life. In this podcast, the host, me, Madison Moore, will share my personal experience of how I attempted to commit suicide and what I plan to do in order to navigate through that darkness in my life.

This raw and honest conversation provides a safe and comforting space for listeners who may be struggling with similar experiences. I want to dive deep with how I’m strengthening my faith in God and the ways he has clearly spoken to me throughout my everyday life, since that night.

What to Expect from this Podcast:

Each episode will provide a new perspective on finding comfort, faith and healing. Listeners will leave feeling empowered to face their own struggles head-on. We will talk about the events leading up to my decision. The thought process from me and those around me. How to form a trust again. Ways to let go, and let God.

In episode one, me and my co-star for this episode, Alvah Cole, dive deep into that struggle and what those battles look like. This pain and seemingly uncontrollable anxiety, ultimately led to an attempt of trying to take my own life. Thankfully, Alvah was a contributing factor that helped save me from this permanent mistake caused by temporary pain. That and guidance from God, who was walking with her every step of the way that night.

Where to Listen to Promise Keepers:

So circle up and talk about what is means to be a Promise Keeper! Join us on this journey to overcome anxiety and depression through faith. Suicide awareness needs to be addressed and being vulnerable will help prevent others from making that same mistake.

Episode 2

Howdy, y’all! I hope you truly enjoyed episode one with Kaitlin and me. On today’s episode, I will be featuring a new guest, my grandmother. My grandmother, Sally Guyton, is currently a professor at Texas A&M University. Nonni (Sally) is from Austin, Texas. She teaches business finance and absolutely loves what she does. I wanted to bring Nonni on because she touches thousands of students’ lives every year. If there is anyone to gather wisdom from it is her. We are planning on discussing the differences between college life now and when she was in school, dating, and financial advice.

Nonni is happily married and has built a beautiful and successful life for herself. There is truly no one I would trust advice or guidance from more than her. She loves what she does and has a passion for people. Being the head of our family, none of us would be where we are without her. She has gotten me through all the good and bad times in life. She has supported me in every aspect of my life.

With Nonni, one of the topics I would like to discuss with her is if she could go back and give her college self advice what would it be? From asking adults this in the past, I have learned some valuable lessons so I want my listeners to have the same opportunity. I also believe in learning from those who have been there before you. Nonni has gone through all the things that I would need help with at this age. I think she has so much to offer our generation. Not everyone has these types of people to look up to in their lives. I want to share her joy and wisdom with all of you guys through this episode.

Kaitlin is a Texas A&M University Animal Science alumni, WHOOP! I met her through the women’s agriculture sorority I was in for a year. I wanted Kaitlin to be one of my first guests on here because me being new to the agriculture industry. She has been a huge role model to me and has been very generous with her time to teach me about it.

To those of you who are not in the agriculture field and are wondering how this will interest you, agriculture puts the food on the table in front of you and the clothes on your back so I think everyone can benefit from learning more about this industry.

After I get done introducing Kaitlin and myself, we will start discussing the overall topic of this episode which is college love life or lack thereof! Both of us are single and happy, but also wondering what happened to the idea we were introduced to at a young age that we would find our husbands in college. Yes of course we have all dated throughout college but clearly ended up with no winners. So have times and generations just changed that much over the years or are we just down on our luck?

Whether you are single or in a relationship while in college, we have some advice for you. Kaitlin and I definitely barely scratched the surface of this topic. So, if you would like us to dig in a little deeper or share some of those failed dating stories reach out to me on my socials!

As you heard on Episode 1, here at Nights On Northgate, we interview bike cops, bouncers, bartenders, and boozers on how to make your Nights On Northgate as fun and safe as possible.

Since you’ve already heard from the bouncers, bartenders, and boozers, we’ve decided to do an entire episode hearing from the bike cops of Northgate.

In episode 2, we will speak with the College Station Police Department and Parks and Tourism Department to learn the Do’s, Don’ts, and how to have a safe night on Northgate.

For the “Girlies”

As a female in College Station, I want to ensure my “girls night out” is as safe as possible, even though we will have too much fun. The world is crazy these days, and there’s no telling what sticky situations you might find yourself in.

For my female listeners, I’ve decided to talk with the police officers about how a group of girls can stay safe during a night out.

We will be discussing topics like how to drink safely, using transportation such as Uber, which bars are believed to be the safest, and how to find help from a police officer if it’s needed.

Bike Cops POV

For the last part of episode two, I want to get to know the Northgate bike cops on a deeper level. And no, I don’t mean the typical “How many kids do you have?” “Where did you grow up?” questions. I plan on asking them, “What has your craziest experience been on Northgate?”

If they can share this information with us, I hope it will be entertaining and possibly educational on what not to do during your Nights On Northgate.

Once again, we will do the hard work of figuring out the Do’s, Don’ts, and how to stay safe on Northgate from the CSPD Bike Cops. The only thing you have to do is visit agcj366.tamu.edu on April 28 to hear the advice we receive.

Welcome to College Station! You’re a freshman at Texas A&M, and you’re so excited for fun nights out with your friends on Northgate. But where do you begin? That’s where the “Nights On Northgate” podcast comes into play.

This podcast will explain the tips and tricks from behind the bar to make your nights of “bar crawling” the best they can be.

In episode 1, we will talk to a few managers, bartenders, and other employees working at College Stations’ favorite bars. They will be explaining their “Nights On Northgate” from a different point of view than what our listeners are used to.

Sips and Secrets at Chimy’s Cerveceria:

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear the secrets behind the faces of Chimy’s Cerveceria. Together we will explain what a typical weekend night looks like at Chimy’s, the bartenders’ drink of choice, the most popular drink/shot, and the craziest stories from their position behind the bar.

Take Your Pick:

From personal experience, my first few “Nights On Northgate” could have used some advice from a few of my now favorite bars. I’ve decided that we need to allow our listeners to listen to the point of view from a few of our favorite bars so they know what they’re getting themselves into.

With over 30 bars on Northgate, we’ve decided to keep the last two we will speak with a secret from our listeners. You might hear about the Buzz Button shot from The Dragonfly, how to handle the “mother pucker” from The Spot, seeing the rattlesnake and playing dominoes at The Chicken, or dancing the night away at the freshman-infested Shiner Park.

We will do all the hard work for you; the only thing you’ll have to do is make your way to agcj366.tamu.edu, to hear all the secrets and decide where you want to spend the majority of your Nights On Northgate.

Benn There, Run That – Episode 2 – Running is Repetitive

Running is Repetitive

Racing is very fun for runners. It’s what we train for and why we do what we do. However, compared to how much you have to train in order to race at your best, the fun stuff is only a small fraction of what goes into the sport. Running itself is extremely repetitive and it can be easy to fall into a bad cycle of dreading the sport.

You can change up your workouts and distances, but the majority of running is just easy training in order to let your body recover from your previous workout or race. Because of this, it is easy to get bored and resent the sport. Doing the same thing over and over is a tedious task.

Running at Dale Watts Cross Country Course

How can we stay in love with the sport if we have come to not like it? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Run in a new place
    • This is the easiest way to switch it up. Seeing new sights on your run can make a huge difference in your perception of the run.
  • Run with music
    • Another simple one to help take your mind off things as you get going. It can help you zone out or zone in depending on what you need.
  • Run with people and tell stories
    • Sharing stories is a great way to make the time fly by. Having other people and conversations makes running way more fun
  • Run during a different time of the day
    • You would be shocked at how different you feel at night versus during the day. Not only is it almost like you are running in a new place, but your body also feels different

In this episode we will be joined by BCS Marathon Director Chris Field as well as Boston marathon qualifier and A&M Consolidated High School assistant cross country coach Andrew Hanna.

As men that specialize in the longer distances, they understand the long, slow miles add up and how running is repetitive. They will offer their insights into how to make them more enjoyable.

Injury Impact on Runners

At some point as a runner, you are likely going to deal with injuries. Not only is an injury impact on runners a major hindrance physically, but emotionally they can take a toll on a runner. You spend months preparing for the next big race and getting ready to set a shiny new personal best, only for a sudden bump in the road to seemingly erase everything.

Running at Texas A&M Invitational

However, this is not the case. Many injuries and their impact can be limited. Whether it is immediately taking time off or getting into cross training in order to minimize the loss of fitness. Some types of cross training for runners include:

  • Swimming
  • Biking
  • Rowing
  • Elliptical

Many people do not realize how little you lose when you only take a couple days off and how there may even be some benefits. Cross training can work different muscles and give the ones you use while running a much needed break.

This episode brings in special guest Eric Casarez to discuss injuries he has experienced during his time as a collegiate runner and his most recent injury in which he came back to set the school record.

Coming Back

Furthermore, we will dive into what it is like coming back from some of the more severe injuries.

Sometimes, you just have bad luck and there is nothing you can do but play the waiting game. Unfortunately, you will not come back in the best shape. This can be extremely difficult for runners that are used to being able to run certain paces, but suddenly cannot.

During these times of frustration, it is important to remember that there have been plenty of successful runners who have gone through the same situation you are going through.

Runner in boot.

There is no getting around the fact that injuries suck. However, do not let this stop you from chasing your goals.

What Am I Doing With My Life? – Episode 2

In episode two of What Am I Doing With My Life?, we’ll be talking to two of my mentors that helped me through middle school and high school. Most of the time, adults seem to have everything figured out. That feeling is magnified when we look up to someone. Sometimes it helps to hear their stories and advice, even though it can seem like we’ll never reach their level.

The first guest we’ll meet with is Calvin Casey. He was my youth pastor in high school and has gone through many changes despite only being in his early 40s. He spent the first 14 years of his career as youth counselor and mentor before becoming a youth pastor in 2012. He was a youth Pastor in Memphis, Tennessee for three years before moving his family to Decatur, Texas and later to Katy, Texas. Since 2016, Calvin has been mentoring other ministers and youth workers as a self-employed consultant, making it his full-time job in 2018. In 2020, his experience landed him a job as a ministry consultant and coach. This episode follows Calvin as he led his wife and three kids across the country and through job uncertainty while managing to touch countless lives along the way.

You will also get a chance to hear from my 7th grade Texas History teacher, Dwayne Lacy. Mr. Lacy was a teacher for Houston ISD for 16 years before transferring to Katy ISD in 2021. He is also a teacher fellow in an organization called Teach Plus, an organization that “grows and empowers teacher leaders to create an equitable education system for students.” Mr. Lacy was also the faculty sponsor for Christians on Campus when I was in middle school. Along with his fellow history teachers, they were able to get a Texas tour field trip authorized for any seventh grader who attended required meetings at a minimal cost. He also makes a point to connect with his students long after they have left his classroom and entered the workforce. This episode will peel back the curtains on the things we know least about our teachers because they sacrifice so much for us, their personal lives, their hobbies, and their dreams.

In episode one of What Am I Doing With My Life?, we’ll be talking to two of my closest friends as they navigate the process of getting into professional school, specifically med school and vet school. This episode is also perfect for anyone who is thinking about going to grad school or is just not sure what to do after graduation.

Paul and Franklin throwing a gig 'em (thumbs up) at a Texas A&M football gameOur first guest is Franklin Fitzgerald. We’ve gone to school together since the fourth grade, and we’ve been friends for over half our lives. Despite having vastly different ideas of what we want to do with our lives, we have always had a lot in common family wise. From Franklin’s story, you’ll hear from someone who didn’t get in on the first try, juggled jobs, moved back with his parents, moved back out, and juggled more jobs. Would he have liked to get into med school on the first shot? Absolutely. Is it anything a little perspective can’t help? Absolutely not.

Paul left), Carly (middle), Maddie (right), ride the bus after a Texas A&M football game

I didn’t meet our second guest until I was already at A&M. I met Maddie as an Impact counselor my freshman year at A&M. We were counselors together in Delta Asher. After camp was over, I started to develop a close-knit friendship with Maddie and Carly, my wife. Maddie is an aspiring veterinarian, and she was recently awarded the opportunity to go to vet school in Dublin, Ireland. However, the painstaking process came with moving back home, rejections, and international learning curves. They can’t teach you how to navigate these scenarios in school, but Maddie feels she learned a lot and would love to share her experience with others who are feeling lost or are in a similar situation.

In this episode, we talk about how dangerous wolves can be, especially when it’s a story like this.

Horror in the Canadian Outback

A family of four went camping in Canada and their trip turned into a scene from a horror movie.

A New Jersey woman named Elisa Rispoli and her husband Matthew Rispoli with their two little boys took a hiking and camping trip in Canada at Rampart Creek Campground. In the middle of the night, a lone wolf tore into their tent looking for a midnight snack.

Matthew sprung out of his bag and jumped in front of the wolf trying to protect his family. The wolf grabbed him and started to drag him away.

The boys were screaming in fear. His wife Elisa tried to grab him and pull him back into the remnants of the tent.

Matthew tried to pin the wolf to the ground. Instead, the wolf got the best of him, rolled him over, and bit into his arm.

Elisa stated I was pulling on his legs trying to get him back,”. “I cannot and don’t think I’ll ever be able to properly describe the terror.”

During the commotion of the attack, a nearby hunter Russ Feeran over as fast as he could to help out with the situation. He described the situation as a horror movie as Matthew was dragged away in the dark.

Russ ran up to the wolf and kicked it as hard as he possibly could in the head. The kick startled the wolf. It let go of Matthew leaving him covered in blood on his left side.

Matthew and Russ started screaming and throwing rocks at the wolf to scare it away from the campsite. Elsia said the incident only lasted a couple of minutes but felt like an eternity.

Matthew was taken to the hospital for bodily injury to his hands and arms but will recover fully.

The campsite was shut down for a week, and the wolf was hunted during that period of time for public safety.

Brady Lowry (left) and Kendell Cummings (right) In Cody Wyoming, two college wrestlers found themselves in a near-death situation. Brady Lowry and Kendell Cummings were out on the mountains antler hunting in pretty thick woods. They happen to run into a full-grown grizzly bear and almost ended on the bear’s dinner menu.

They didn’t realize there was a bear since the brush was very thick until they were too close to escape.  Brady Lowry said once the bear got on top of Kendell Cummings and started attacking him he didn’t know what to do. He jumped on top of the bear’s back and pulled the bear’s ears trying to get the bear off of Kendell. At this point, the bear already tore Kendell up really well. Kendell stated, “I could hear when his teeth would hit my skull, I could feel when he’d bite down on my bones and they’d kind of crunch”. After Brady got the bear off of Kendell the bear chopped down on Brady’s arm crushing it into pieces. Once the bear let go of Brady’s arm both of them ran as fast as they could to get away from the bear.

As soon the two men broke free from the attack they call 911 which elicited an immediate response from both Park County Search and Rescue and personnel from the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. Luckily as

well there were some local hunters around to help Brady and Kendell when they reach the local trails. Kendell had to be life flighted from the trails and Brady rode in an ambulance back to the hospital.

Both men, wrestling teammates at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming, reportedly underwent multiple surgeries after sustaining major lacerations to the body and face. Kendell stated “I don’t know what I’m going to pay him back, I don’t. I owe him everything,” regarding Brady.

Brady and Kendell are on a long road to recovery but are just happy to be alive.

In the pilot episode of Chomp, our chef will be Hondo Goebel, a sophomore engineering student at Texas A&M University. With his busy schedule and lack of cooking skills, most of his meals are a patty melt with grilled jalapeños from Whataburger, the largest meal that Layne’s sells, or whatever his roommate cooks and shares with him.

However, what he lacks in a cooking routine, he makes up for with his love of showing off as a host and making his crowd pleasing jalapeño poppers, a recipe I taught him.

If you didn’t figure it out already, Hondo is my brother and we are each other’s biggest critics. Therefore, you should take my opinion even more seriously when I say that he can make jalapeño poppers better than our mother, the inventor of the recipe.

Hondo, our mom, and me!

After years of refining, Hondo has adapted this recipe to be an easy and delicious appetizer for groups of all sizes. It is the perfect dish for a dinner party, barbeque, ring dunk, or darty. These poppers are not your regular cream cheese filled jalapenos, they are hearty with a sausage/cream cheese stuffing. They also last perfectly in the fridge and taste great to snack on all week.

All you need for this recipe is a sheet pan, knife, and any type of frying pan. Grab these ingredients before listening, and let’s chomp down together.

Watch us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other streaming platforms, or on the AGCJ366 website at agcj366.tamu.edu.

Ingredients:
10 large Jalapeños (remember that each jalapeño makes two poppers)
Two 8 ounce blocks of cream cheese
One regular 16 ounce Owen’s pork sausage
Any maple syrup (doesn’t have to be real maple syrup, Aunt Jemima works fine)
One pack of bacon

This week’s guest is the definition of a renaissance man. An engineering student by day, and a hunter by night, Logan Carroll spends nearly all his time either in Zachry, Gold’s Gym, or traversing the brush of South Texas. This January, he hunted in Crystal City with his father, tracking down the elusive nilgai antelope.

Logan with a white-tail deer he hunted.

If you haven’t heard of nilgai before, don’t worry. This creature, also known as the Blue Bulls, looks like a cross between a horse and a Brahman bull if you put some deer antlers on top of it. In reality, it is actually the largest antelope that hails from Asia, weighing up to 700 pounds.

Nilgai Antelope

Many of the ranches in South Texas breed and raise them to sell as exotic hunting experiences for hunters all over the United States. The flavor is similar to white tail deer, but with a softer taste than its smaller counterpart. Fried deer backstrap is a South Texas delicacy, so fried nilgai backstrap is its exotic cousin.

Logan learned early how to kill, skin, and process a deer, and most importantly – how to fry them. In this episode, he will take us through the process of preparing and tenderizing the wild game his father killed this year.

We realize that exotic antelope meat is not typically sold at H-E-B or found even at farmer’s markets, so Chomp doesn’t expect you to find it for this recipe. We recommend that you follow along with your protein of choice. Pork chops, chicken breasts or thighs, or even turkey will be just as delicious and will substitute perfectly for this recipe.

All you need for this recipe is a few bowls, tongs, potato masher, and two pots. Grab these and your ingredients, and let’s chomp down.

Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other streaming platforms, or on the AGCJ366 website at agcj366.tamu.edu.
